What is Dark Web? How to Access It ?

The “dark web” is not any single site or even a single network.  It refers to parts of the web that are built on top of darknets (overlay networks) that require specific software or configurations to access.

One of the reasons that Tor is so popular is that it’s fairly easy to access, and does a lot of the gruntwork for you.  And to clarify, Tor is a both a network and a browser.  The Tor browser uses the Tor network to access the internet; follow so far?

In addition to allowing you to access the clearnet (a.k.a. “surface web”) semi-anonymously, the Tor network has its own list of Tor hidden services (known as .onion sites).

As for how to find one or more of these sites, there are quite a few pages on both the clearnet and Tor where you can find lists of links.

Since you said “black market,” specifically, I assume you’re referring to darknet markets, which are online markets that use anonymity networks like Tor.

The site https://www.deepdotweb.com/ is a clearnet site that features articles about the “deep web” and “dark web.”  Included on their site is a list of darknet markets, which is updated pretty frequently.

What Markets Exist?

One example of this type of market is Alphabay, which is likely the most popular right now – they even have a clearnet site that tells about the market.

Be that as it may, accessing some of these markets isn’t so cut-and-dried.  Often, because they don’t trust everyone, you need a referral invite to join.  Additionally, once you provide login information (e.g. email address, username), you’ll almost always have to provide a PGP key as part of the registration process.

Part of the reason for this is to lock out bots that steal personal information, money, and other valuable things.

All that aside, once you’re registered, you can browse through the market like any other.  Generally, most of these markets accept bitcoin (and sometimes other cryptocurrencies like Altcoin or Litecoin).  Something else you may not know is that these markets sell other things besides drugs.  A number of them sell hacked PayPal and Amazon accounts, or skimmed credit cards, or even innocuous items like books.  Others sell technology like iPhones, iPads, Androids, Amazon Echos, and smartwatches.

class=”ui_qtext_para”>Why would someone buy these on the dark web, you ask?  It’s more than likely that the technology items were either stolen, hacked, or disassembled and repackaged in some way (like in a chop shop).  The vendors may sell the items at a competitive price to have an advantage over markets on the clearnet.

Personally, I’ve never bought anything from one of these markets because of the risk involved.  Nonetheless, people do write reviews and opinions of the different markets and vendors, which is often where people are able to sort the scammers from the legitimate ones.

If you’re willing to risk being caught in the process of doing all this, I say more power to you!  You’d be far from the only one using the markets.  I just warn you that Tor users, especially, are monitored by law enforcement; also, you don’t always know whom you’re dealing with.

Have fun, and keep your identity sacred; it’s your most valuable asset.
